One of the hardest parts of loving our pets is watching them grow older. Every year we get with our pups is a gift, but as they age, we've noticed changes in their activity level. In October 2025, we learned she had torn a ligament in her right knee. As part of her pre-surgery workup, the veterinarian discovered a concerning lump in her anal gland. After multiple appointments with specialists, we received the devastating news—it was cancer. Thankfully, it had not spread. We decided to move forward with surgery, not knowing how much it would impact Ethel Mae's health and mobility.
Ethel Mae has also been living with an autoimmune disease for more than six years. Although her surgery was successful and the cancer was removed, her body did not respond well afterward. The weeks that followed were incredibly difficult. She spent weeks in the hospital, underwent multiple procedures, required feeding tubes, and lost 14 pounds. Thankfully, by the end of February, all of her tests were normal and she was finally on the road to recovery.
But there was another challenge. Because she had barely moved for weeks, she developed severe muscle atrophy and could no longer walk.
We were so excited to bring our sweet girl home, but it broke our hearts to see how frustrated she was that she could barely move. We brought in a veterinarian who performed acupuncture treatments, which seemed to help her energy levels. My husband and I also spent one to two hours every day stretching and exercising with Ethel Mae.
Once she was cleared to begin physical therapy, we started seeing her hard work pay off. We went from completely lifting her and carrying her outside, to using a support cart, to watching her hold her own weight, then take a few steps, and eventually begin walking with our assistance. Every single day brought progress. Those moments made all of the back pain, long days, and sleepless nights completely worth it.

Looking Back
This journey tested us emotionally and physically, but it also reminded us how resilient our pets can be and how much love exists between people and their animals.
