How We Converted an Empty Furnace Closet into a Functional Dry Pantry

Who would have thought that installing a new AC and HVAC system would result in a spacious new dry pantry?

When our new HVAC system was installed, the furnace was relocated to the attic, leaving behind a large, empty closet. It was an awkward size, so we weren't quite sure what to do with it. For a while, we simply ignored it—until our kitchen counters and dining table became the catch-all for everything that didn't fit in our pantry or cleaning closet.

I already use chrome wire shelving in both my cleaning closet and office closet, and I've found it's one of the best ways to maximize storage while keeping everything visible. Since this closet was both deep and tall, I wanted to make full use of the space without creating a black hole where items disappeared into the back.

After measuring the closet, I realized I could fit two wire shelving units front to back. To make sure I could easily access everything stored in the rear, I paired the shelves with pull-out storage bins. Instead of digging through piles of loose items, I could simply slide out a bin and grab exactly what I needed.

Before I could order everything, though, we had to finish the closet itself.

As I've mentioned before, I'm not a DIYer—and neither is my hubby. If I'm being honest, we just don't enjoy those kinds of projects. The ceiling and floor still needed to be repaired after the furnace was removed, several large holes had to be patched, and everything needed a fresh coat of paint.

Painting was actually the part I was most excited about. I considered painting the closet black, choosing a bold accent color, and even adding wallpaper. But after applying the primer, I stepped back and thought, Why overcomplicate it? The clean white finish made the space feel bright, fresh, and larger than it actually was, so I decided to leave it that way.

I should also mention that I was recovering from a broken shoulder at the time, so the project took me about twice as long as it normally would have. My husband offered to do all the painting, but I insisted—only to remember halfway through why I don't actually enjoy painting!

Once everything arrived, it was finally time to put the pantry together.

I even decided to film my very first unboxing video while assembling the wire shelving. Thankfully, I was able to find the exact shelving I'd used in my other closets. One feature I especially appreciated was the fixed shelf spacing. Many wire shelving systems let you customize the shelf heights, but because I was placing two units front to back, I wanted every shelf to line up perfectly. The fixed design made alignment effortless and created one continuous storage system.

Assembly was surprisingly easy. Each shelving unit took about 20 minutes to put together.

To help the storage bins slide smoothly, I lined every shelf with shelf liner. It's a small detail, but it made a big difference in how easily the bins glide in and out.

The real star of the project, though, was the over-the-door storage rack. It increased our storage space by at least 30%—maybe even more. Not only does it hold a surprising amount, but it's also incredibly sturdy and well-made. I honestly can't imagine this pantry without it.

The finished result was absolutely worth it.

Within just a couple of hours of organizing everything, our kitchen counters were clear, the dining table was usable again, and we had a spacious dry pantry with room to grow. Everything finally has a designated home, and thanks to the pull-out bins, even the items stored in the very back are easy to reach.

Sometimes the best home improvements aren't the most expensive renovations. They're simply finding better ways to use the space you already have.
